Commuters of all descriptions are enjoying the new concrete path beside the river between Grey Street and Derby Street next to Mitre 10.
Not only are cyclists and walkers enjoying the smooth surface, but those with small wheels -- scooters, skateboards, pushchairs, mobility scooters etc -- are finding the concrete path easier to negotiate. Until path lighting is installed, Mitre 10's carpark floodlights provide sufficient night light.
The Mitre 10 path extends the Taruheru River trail from Grey to Derby Street. In time, this will connect existing walking and cycling paths, and provide safe travel all the way to Campion College, with connecting links to other schools.
"Tapuwae Tairāwhiti Trails looks forward to the Taruheru Trail enabling school students to get safely to and from school, and to after-school activities independently," says trust secretary Gillian Ward.
"Schools and students are loving the Wednesday Challenge to get to and from school in ways that don't involve a private car on Wednesdays. As we tackle the tricky parts, like creating the path under the bridges, it will become more feasible for school students to walk, scoot, skateboard and cycle to and from school safely.
"We congratulate Gisborne District Council and Mitre 10 for this mahi."
